The Science of Tension: Why Canvases Sag

To understand why canvas wedges are necessary, we must look at the materials. These fibres are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb and release moisture from the surrounding environment.

When humidity in your studio rises, canvas fibres expand, causing the surface to slacken. When the air dries, they contract, tightening the surface once more. Over time, these continuous cycles can cause the fabric to permanently lose its elasticity. Heavy applications of acrylic gesso, oil-based primers, or thick paint also weigh down the canvas, leading to ripples or a loose, sluggish response to your brush.

This is why mass-produced canvases with fixed, glued joints are a risky choice. When a fixed canvas sags, there is no way to restore its tension without completely removing the fabric and restretching it from scratch.


How Expandable Joinery Works

The professional solution lies beneath the surface. High-quality stretcher bars are engineered with precision joinery, featuring interlocking tongue-and-groove mitred corners. These corners are deliberately left unglued and unstapled, allowing the frame to be fully adjustable.

This is where canvas wedges come into play. These small, triangular wooden pegs slide into pre-cut slots in the inner corners of the stretcher frame. When you tap a wedge into the slot, it acts as a mechanical shim. By driving the wedge deeper, you force the mitred corners to expand outward by fractions of a millimetre.

This tiny, controlled expansion increases the overall perimeter of the wooden frame, pulling the stretched fabric taut once again and restoring that satisfying, drum-like bounce.


How to Use Canvas Wedges: A Step-by-Step Guide

Using canvas wedges is a straightforward process, but it requires care and precision to avoid warping the frame.

  1. Know When to Wedge: Do not insert wedges as soon as you stretch your canvas. They are a maintenance tool, not a stretching tool. Only use them when the canvas begins to show signs of slackness, or after heavy priming or painting has relaxed the fibres.

  2. Position the Wedges: Each corner of an adjustable frame has two pre-cut slots. Slide one wedge into each slot, pointing toward the outer corner. You will need eight wedges in total (two per corner).

  3. Protect the Fabric: Before tapping, place a piece of thick cardboard between the back of the canvas fabric and the hammer to prevent accidental slips from puncturing or marking your painting surface.

  4. Tap Gently and Evenly: Using a small hammer, tap the wedges gently into their slots. Work your way around the canvas in a diagonal, cross-wise pattern (e.g., top-left, bottom-right, then top-right, bottom-left), giving each wedge one or two light taps.

  5. Check Tension and Squareness: Pause frequently to check the tension on the front. You want a firm, springy surface, not a rigid board. Additionally, measure the frame's diagonals. If the diagonal measurements are equal, your frame is perfectly square. Over-tapping one corner can cause the frame to skew.
