Geometry in the Studio: The Story Behind This 80cm Hexagon Canvas

A Bespoke Hexagon Canvas

When an artist reaches out with a vision that steps outside the traditional rectangular frame, the workshop's energy shifts. Standard sizes are the bread and butter of studio life, but bespoke geometric shapes are where precision engineering meets true creative collaboration. This week, we took on a unique project: a custom-built 80cm hexagon canvas crafted for a specific artist's vision.

Building a six-sided frame isn't just a matter of joining timber; it is a masterclass in structural integrity and geometric accuracy. Standard four-corner stretchers pull tension along predictable horizontal and vertical axes. A hexagon, however, distributes force across six sides, requiring absolute precision in the framing phase to ensure every angle locks together seamlessly. To achieve perfect symmetry and smooth edges, we laser-cut a custom MDF frame specifically tailored to the 80cm dimensions. This laser-cut approach guarantees exact 120-degree angles and an unyielding foundation that resists warping under tension.

For the surface, we paired the rigid MDF structure with a premium 12oz cotton duck canvas. Cotton duck in a heavy 12oz weight provides the perfect balance of flexibility and strength. It offers a robust, durable weave that can handle rich paint application, heavy layers, or delicate detail without tearing or stretching out of shape over time.

As you can see on the workbench, stretching raw fabric over a multi-angled frame requires a specific rhythmic technique. Using heavy-duty canvas pliers, the 12oz cotton must be pulled systematically from opposing sides to balance tension evenly around all six edges. Securing corners on non-standard angles demands meticulous folding and tacking to ensure the folds remain neat, flat, and drum-tight. The goal is simple: provide the artist with a rock-solid surface that stays perfectly taut for decades, giving them total confidence to paint right up to the crisp outer edges.

Custom shapes encourage both the maker and the painter to break free from traditional composition. The clean lines of a laser-cut hexagon bring an architectural, almost organic symmetry to a piece before a single drop of paint touches the surface. Crafting bespoke, reliable surfaces to help artists bring their ambitious ideas to life is exactly why we do what we do at HM Canvases.
