Precision in Every Millimetre: Made-to-Measure Stretcher Bars for Artists and Framers

For professional artists and picture framers, a canvas is far more than just a surface to hold paint. It is a highly engineered structure under constant, immense tension. When a piece of art is designed to last a lifetime, the invisible skeleton beneath—the stretcher bars—must be flawless.
Standard, off-the-shelf stretcher bars in fixed increments often force a compromise. A panoramic landscape is squeezed, an antique tapestry is folded, or a framer is left struggling to fit a warped frame into a pristine finished moulding.
At HM Canvases, we eliminate these compromises. We hand-craft made-to-measure stretcher bars to the exact millimetre, providing a level of precision and structural integrity that serves both the creative vision of the artist and the exacting standards of the professional picture framer.
Why Tulipwood is the Professional Standard
Most mass-market stretcher bars are made from soft, fast-growing pine. While economical, pine is prone to knots, sap pockets, and grain variations that make it highly susceptible to warping, twisting, or bowing when subjected to the tension of stretched fabric.
We do things differently. Every single stretcher bar that leaves our workshop is milled from premium, knot-free Tulipwood.
Tulipwood is a stable, straight-grained hardwood that offers unmatched structural integrity.
Warp-Free Stability: It resists the twisting forces of tightly stretched linen or 12oz cotton duck, ensuring the finished canvas stays perfectly flat on the wall.
Knot-Free Strength: Without knots or sap pockets, there are no weak points in the timber, and zero risk of acidic sap bleeding through to ruin the canvas fibres over time.
Lightweight Yet Durable: It provides the density and strength of a hardwood without adding unnecessary weight, making it ideal for large-scale gallery installations.
Precision Joinery and Expandable Corners
A stretcher bar is only as good as its joints. Our bars are engineered with precision joinery, featuring hand-finished mitred corners that lock together seamlessly at a perfect 90-degree angle.
Because temperature and humidity naturally cause fabrics to expand and contract, a professional canvas must never be statically fixed. Our mitred corner joints are designed to be fully expandable.
Every set of our custom stretcher bars is supplied with our bespoke wooden canvas wedges (lovingly crafted from our workshop Tulipwood 'offcuts' as part of our Zero-Waste Policy). By gently tapping these wedges into the corner slots, artists and framers can precisely adjust the tension of the surface over time, keeping the fabric drum-tight and preventing sagging.
A Reliable Partner for Picture Framers
Picture framers face unique challenges. When a client brings in a valuable original painting, an heirloom tapestry, or a delicate silk embroidery, the stretching process must be archival, reversible, and perfectly square.
If the stretcher bars are even slightly out of square or begin to bow, the entire framing process is compromised. It can cause the outer frame to gap, strain the glass, or distort the artwork.
Our made-to-measure service is designed to be a seamless extension of your framing workshop:
Exact Millimetre Sizing: We build to your exact specifications, allowing you to match the precise dimensions of an antique textile or a custom-milled moulding.
Consistent Profiles: We offer standard 25 mm, 32mm and deep 40mm profiles, milled to consistent tolerances so they seat perfectly within floating tray frames or traditional rebates.
Stretching Service: For local framers or highly complex projects, we also offer a professional stretching service, taking the heavy lifting off your hands.
For the Hands-On Artist
Many artists find a deep, meditative satisfaction in the tactile process of stretching their own canvases. It connects you to the physical history of painting, allowing you to choose your exact fabric grain and hand-apply your own sizing and primer.
However, stretching your own canvas shouldn't mean building your own frames from scratch. By ordering our bespoke stretcher bars, you get a museum-grade skeleton delivered directly to your studio. You can focus your energy on the tension of the fabric and the application of your gesso, confident that the underlying structure is built to professional gallery standards.
Hand-Crafted with Artist-Led Quality
HM Canvases is owned and run by artists. We understand the frustration of working with sub-par materials because we paint on them too. Every order of bespoke stretcher bars is hand-milled, hand-finished, and inspected in our workshop to ensure absolute squareness and a flawless finish.
Whether you need a single custom set for a gallery commission or a reliable supply of premium bars for your framing business, we are here to support your craft.
