Thinking Outside the Box: Crafting Large-Scale Quarter-Circle Canvases in Our Workshop

At HM Canvases, standard sizes and traditional rectangular frames are our everyday bread and butter, but custom bespoke projects are where our workshop truly comes alive. As artists ourselves, we know that creative visions rarely fit neatly into off-the-shelf boxes. So, when a client recently approached us with an ambitious concept for a massive, multi-panel circular artwork, we jumped at the challenge.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we designed and engineered these four large-scale quarter-circle frames—and why no idea is ever too complex or oversized for our UK workshop to bring to life.
The Vision: A Massive Modular Tondo
Circular canvases (traditionally known as tondos) bring a striking, fluid dynamic to any gallery wall or interior space. However, when you scale a circle up to a dramatic size, standard construction methods present two major hurdles: structural integrity and logistics.
A single-piece circular canvas at this scale would not only be prone to warping under heavy fabric tension, but it would also be a nightmare to transport through standard doorways, stairwells, or delivery vans.
The solution? A clever four-piece modular design:
Four precision quarter-circles engineered to seamlessly align into a single, breathtaking circular display.
Independent structural stability for each quadrant, allowing for crisp edges and flawless surface tension when stretched.
Modular convenience, making transport, handling, and installation significantly easier for the artist and client.
Precision Engineering Meets Handcrafted Woodworking
Creating a curved frame requires a completely different approach than assembling straight-edged tulipwood stretcher bars. To achieve a perfectly smooth outer perimeter that retains its curve under taut canvas tension, exact precision is non-negotiable.
1. Laser-Cut Outer Rims
To guarantee a flawless arc on each quadrant, we utilised custom laser-cutting techniques. This ensures that when all four sections are placed together on the workbench—as pictured above—they form a perfectly uniform circle without gaps, flat spots, or misalignment along the joining edges.
2. Heavy-Duty Cross-Bracing
Large-scale frames need robust internal support to resist twisting and pulling once primed fabric or heavy linen is applied. Each quarter-circle is reinforced with internal hardwood cross-bracing and fortified corner plates. This internal skeleton maintains rigid 90-degree corner angles while distributing tension evenly along the outer arc.
3. Smooth Edges for Stretching
A canvas frame must protect the canvas itself. Every outer rim profile is carefully machined and smoothed to ensure that when the fabric is pulled tight around the curve, it sits seamlessly without sharp angles that could cause wear or cracking over time.
From Workshop to Easel: Turning Complex Ideas into Reality
What makes this project special isn't just the sheer scale of the frames—it’s what they represent about our commitment at HM Canvases.
Whether you need a traditional 10x10cm canvas, a 3-metre stretched linen frame, or a custom geometric form like these quarter-circle quadrants, we build everything to measure right here in our workshop.
What We Bring to Every Custom Build:
Artist-First Perspective:Â Because our team consists of practising artists, we consider how paint, primer weight, and fabric stretch will react with the frame architecture.
Material Excellence:Â From high-grade Tulipwood and Medite Premier MDF to premium cotton duck and linens, we select materials built to last a lifetime.
Tailored Engineering:Â No off-the-shelf compromises. We adapt internal bracing, lip profiles, and depth to suit your specific medium and mounting requirements.
Have an Unconventional Project in Mind?
If you’ve been sketching out a grand installation, a complex multi-panel composition, or an unusual shape that you aren't sure how to build, don't compromise your vision.
From custom tondos and ovals to bespoke cradled painting panels and large-scale floating tray frames, we love collaborating with artists, interior designers, and galleries to solve complex creative challenges.
